Tips for Finding High-Quality Carpet in America

Selecting the best, American-made carpet for your needs can seem like a daunting task, but we are here to help you in your search. How can you find high-quality carpet in America, and what should you be looking for? Let’s take a closer look.

Tips for Choosing High-Quality Carpet in America

Whether you are replacing the carpet in your home or business, follow the same general rules of thumb. We recommend that you apply the following tips when looking for high-quality carpet in America.

1. Choose the right fiber.

There are 5 main categories of fiber:

  • Wool (and Wool Blends)

The pros of wool include softer, highly durable, stain-resistant fabric. Cons include a heftier price tag.

  • Nylon

Nylon is similar to wool in durability and feel. Additionally, it is stain-resistant and affordable. However, like wool, the price tends to run high.

  • Olefin (polypropylene)

Advantages of olefin carpet include durability against water and stains. However, its lifespan tends to run a little shorter. We recommend olefin for low-pile carpets only.

  • Polyester

Polyester carpet is soft, holds color, and resists damage from soiling. Like olefin, however, it is not as resilient as some other types of fiber.

  • Acrylic

Acrylic often looks and feels like wool while remaining resistant to moisture and mildew. However, we do not recommend acrylic for carpeting in rooms, as it lacks resiliency. Instead, acrylic is often reserved for bathroom mats.

2. Choose the right style.

There are three main styles of carpeting:

  • Loop-pile carpets

Durability is a major pro of loop-pile carpet. However, it is difficult to keep clean. Its durability makes it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas (such as hallways), but expect some maintenance.

  • Cut-pile carpets

Cut-pile carpet both looks and feels high-quality. However, its durability relies on the level of its maintenance. Examples of cut-pile carpets include velvet, saxonies, and friezes.

  • Cut-loop pile

We recommend cut-loop pile carpet for stairways and informal rooms, as it is extremely durable. Keep in mind that the higher the pile on your carpet, the less durable it will be.

3. Keep the importance of weight in mind.

The weight of a square yard of carpet will give you a better idea of how much yarn the carpet contains, and the higher the weight, the longer that product will last (according to This Old House). Be careful you are only comparing the weight of similar products, though, as different fibers are going to have different weights.

4. Always read the fine print of the warranty.

As with any product, the length of the warranty that the company includes (at no additional cost) offers you a good idea of the typical life-span of your carpet. The longer the warranty is, the better the quality is of the product. Pay close attention to the fine print, as not all warranties reimburse the full cost of the product or replacement.

5. Consider environmental and economic impacts.

There is a growing trend among consumers within the U.S. towards American-made, environmentally friendly products, and those who use them take pride in these selections. It may lead to a greater upfront cost, but the economic and environmental impacts are invaluable.
