How to Clean Your Area Rug?
Putting off cleaning an area rug can reduce its lifespan and functionality, so it is imperative that you take care of it at least once a year. If you fail to clean the rug properly, you risk doing irreversible damage. Here is how to clean your area rug.
Why should you clean an area rug?
Cleaning an area rug improves its lifespan and look. Because of this, it is absolutely worthwhile to clean it regularly. The only instance in which you should avoid cleaning your rug is if it is made of a material that is less durable than your standard nylon or polyester. Area rugs that are made of fine wool often need to be cleaned in a different manner, so you should consult a professional before performing maintenance on them.
How can I clean an area rug?
To begin cleaning your area rug, you must first vacuum it. Doing so will suck up any dust trapped in the carpet. Make sure that you hit both sides of the rug as it congregates on the bottom too.
2. Wash the Rug
Washing the rug is a lot easier than it sounds. If you have a hose, then take it outside and set it on a heavy clothesline, fence, or chair and begin spraying it. Doing this prepares it for the shampoo and knocks out any leftovers that your vacuum missed.
3. Apply Carpet Shampoo
After your area rug is soaked, begin applying carpet shampoo to the fibers. Make sure that the product is safe before using it as certain cleaners will stain and ruin your carpet. You should use a brush to help you get the cleaner deep into the area rug’s fibers.
4. Rinse the Rug Again
Upon applying the carpet shampoo it is time to rinse it off again. It is important to note that carpet cleaners generally have a designated time to remain on the carpet before being washed off. Failure to do this will prevent the shampoo from killing all the germs.
5. Help the Rug Dry
Move the rug to an open space to dry. This will take 1-3 days and will cause the area rug to stiffen up. Do not panic when this happens, as it is normal. It is imperative that you wait until the fibers are completely dry before setting them back on the floor.
Restoring its Appearance
Upon setting the area rug back in its location, it is time to vacuum it again. This is less to clean and more to restore its appearance. The fibers get pushed down, causing the carpet to lose its shape after being cleaned. Using a vacuum cleaner to pull these back to position will help it look brand new.
